In order to design safe and comfortable tunnels, a number of issues should be considered, including:
- lighting
- lining colour and texture
- emergency signage
- cross-passage locations
- walkway design
Each of these design elements is important in establishing the aesthetic environment in a tunnel, and in ensuring a high standard of safety. Desirable outcomes from the design process include:
