The Tunnels skill group has a worldwide reputation for technical excellence in the design of tunnels and underground structures

The Tunnels skill group has a worldwide reputation for technical excellence in the design of tunnels and underground structures, and due to the nature of the work undertaken, the team are involved in a variety of multi-disciplinary projects bringing together a broad range of skills from the whole of Halcrow Group.

The skill group has two main centres of excellence, in the UK (London), and Australia (Melbourne and Sydney), but is involved in projects all around the world with a rapidly developing market in North America.

The tunnel design discipline requires the development of a combination of structural and geotechnical design skills, combined with an understanding of the practicalities of working in confined and often difficult conditions, and an appreciation of the factors influencing the design to provide effective solutions for the transportation, water and power supply industries.

The skill group team is uniquely qualified to provide the mentoring and experience necessary to develop the competencies in this sector of the industry, which are rarely covered in depth by University courses.

Current and recent projects include:

  • the High Speed 1, Channel Tunnel Rail Link
  • Crossrail Lot 4
  • Los Angeles Metro East Side Extension
  • Bogong Hydro Power
  • Cooling the Tube project
  • Dockland Light Railway Extension
