Halcrow is delighted to welcome David Coates to its expanding transport planning team. David has joined Halcrow’s Swindon office as an Associate with 30 years experience and a special interest in passenger transport.
David started his career with a major bus company in Scotland where he learnt the principles of bus and coach operations, and then spent 18 years in Milton Keynes where he helped develop local bus services and home to school transport.
He was involved in pioneering smartcard and electronic information systems and organised transport for major events including concerts at the Milton Keynes Bowl.
Between 1998 and 2006 he managed the integrated transport unit at Swindon Borough Council, covering local bus services, concessionary fares, park & ride, bus station management, community transport, home to school transport, day centre transport and taxi licensing. He implemented one of the first bus stop text messaging systems, oversaw the delimitation of hackney carriage plates, and moved Swindon into the Wiltshire concessionary fares consortium.
Between 2006 and 2008 he was with consultant Jacobs in Reading. He project managed reviews of bus services in the Dover and Ashford areas of Kent, a review of taxis and private hire operations in Warrington, and a review of bus stop information in Strathclyde. He provided bus and coach and rail input into a major review of strategic transport projects for Transport Scotland, and also assisted in transport studies of Thameside and Tonbridge/Tunbridge Wells.
