July 2009
Members of Halcrow’s Cardiff office have been working with Whitchurch High School in the Think Maths! initiative – run by More Maths Grads to promote the uptake of maths amongst GCSE pupils.
Participant companies were paired with schools to develop a case study of Maths in the workplace – promoting maths by showing the number and variety of applications of maths in a wide range of workplaces.
Building on the existing partnership between the company and school, Halcrow employees spent time discussing the use of maths across a range of disciplines: surveying, environment, structural, transport planning and geotechnics.
Pupils fed what they learnt into a Think Maths! finale event, promoting the use of maths. Competitive spirit was high with the Halcrow/Whitchurch High School Think Maths! partnership a finalist in the event’s Case Study category, and Whitchurch High School’s Fiona Harding bagging the Best Teacher award.
Paul Maliphant, market sector director, commented: “It was a pleasure to hear year ten students explaining eloquently to an audience of some 200 people what they had learnt about maths from Halcrow and the variety of careers that are open to people with an interest and aptitude in the subject.”
