Halcrow supports Melbourne tram win, Australia

Melbourne tram

One of the world’s largest tram operations

October 2009

Halcrow has helped secure the Melbourne tram franchise for client KDR – a joint venture between international transport operator Keolis and Australia's longest running rail company, Downer EDI Rail.

Halcrow’s transportation and consulting business provided KDR with technical support throughout the tendering process for the £1.4 billion, eight-year contract. Aimed at improving the network’s operational performance, Halcrow’s services included developing an intermodal demand model, reviewing tram timetables and producing rolling stock diagrams.

The team has supported KDR through the contract negotiation and will continue to work closely with the client to ensure a smooth handover from the current operator, scheduled for 30 November 2009.

One of the world’s largest tram operations, Melbourne’s network is vertically integrated. This means KDR will be responsible for passenger service delivery, infrastructure and rolling stock maintenance.
