July 2009
Halcrow’s Cardiff based market sector director, Paul Maliphant was elected to the Council of the Geological Society of London (GSL) at the society's Annual General Meeting in June 2009.
Founded in 1807, GSL gained its Royal Charter in 1824 and is the Chartership body for geologists including the designations CGeol (Chartered Geologist), CSci (Chartered Scientist) and EurGeol (European Geologist) Further information on the society can be found at www.geolsoc.org.uk
Paul is the current chairman of the Society's Southern Wales regional group, which he founded in 1992. Regional issues important to Paul are links with the grass root membership of the society, support to geologists in the formative years of their careers and enhancing links with secondary and tertiary educational institutions.
He will also represent the Engineering Geology profession on Council and will be seeking to enhance links at Council level with other institutions such as ICE and CIWEM to work collectively and collaboratively to address key challenges of modern society such as sustainable development, global warming and moving urgently towards a low carbon economy.
Paul said: “This is an exciting time to join Council due to the combined fiscal and climatic challenges that currently face us all and the need for proactive management of change so as to harness the value that can be gained from our own professional activities and enhanced collaboration with organisations with aligned values and visions. There is a need to focus on areas where the geological profession can most beneficially provide value to society as a whole in the 21st century.”
Should fellow geoscientists or associated professionals have views relating to this, Paul would be pleased to hear from them. Please contact him at maliphantpc@halcrow.com
