Halcrow has recently scooped a gold at the prestigious RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

The coveted gold award was presented at a ceremony held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, alongside Europe’s leading annual health and safety exhibition, the Safety and Health Expo 2010.

The RoSPA awards scheme focuses on reducing the number of accidents and cases of ill-health at work and encourages organisations to develop robust health and safety management systems.

RoSPA’s awards manager David Rawlins said: “Halcrow has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its employees and others. Organisations which do this deserve to have such dedication recognised. As well as there being clear ethical reasons and legal requirements for good health and safety management, there is also a strong business case. RoSPA is delighted to publicly honour organisations which have demonstrated their work to improve performance in this sphere.”

Halcrow's group health and safety director Nigel Valvona said: "The safety and wellbeing of employees and those affected by our work is of core importnace to the business. Receiving this award acknowledges the hard work that employees worldwide put into making sure we have an effective global health and safety management system. It is important that we maintain these standards during the challenging times ahead."

The majority of RoSPA awards are non-competitive and mark achievement, which is graded at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Organisations maintaining high standards can win gold medals, President’s awards and Orders of Distinction.

Competitive awards go to the best entries in 23 individual industry sectors and there are special awards for workforce involvement, training, occupational health, environmental management and the management of occupational road risk.

The awards are sponsored by NEBOSH, the world's leading health and safety professional examining body.
