A-one+, Halcrow’s joint venture with Colas and Costain, celebrated a triumphant hat trick at the national Highways Magazine Excellence Awards on 12 October.
The first accolade to be awarded to A-one+ was the highway worker and site safety initiative award for its work with Highway Resource Solutions in developing the Intellicone, an integrated safety solution for road maintenance contractors. Developed and trialled by the A-one+ Area 12 errant vehicles working group, the Intellicone transforms ordinary temporary road cones into an electronic safety perimeter. The judges commented that the "Intellicone is a good example of the use of technology to aid safety through increasing warning to road workers.”
The A-one+ joint venture was also commended in the highway industry product of the year category for its use and promotion of glass-resin reinforced polyester (GRP) sign material. The judges said the GRP material was “A product that addresses durability and the problem of theft and which is a good example of long term development leading to the appropriate certification of the product.”
To round off a very successful evening, A-one+ was also awarded the judges’ special merit award as ‘winner of winners’ for the Intellicone.
A-one+ group leader Brian Stanforth said: “A special thank you to all those involved in developing and promoting these products. This is once again another excellent example of A-one+ shaping the wider industry by the sharing of best practice.”
The awards ceremony took place in the Royal Garden Hotel in London. Representatives from A-one+ joined over 300 distinguished guests at the event which recognises, celebrates and shares excellence and innovation within the highway sector.
The awards are in association with and judged by, the Highways Agency and the UK Department for Transport. This year saw a record number of entries which makes the A-one+ success all the more exceptional.
