Ten years of protecting The Broads - for communities, for wildlife, for you.
The Forum, 2 Millennium Plain, Bethel Street, Norwich NR2 1TF
Wednesday 1 June 12pm to 8pm. Thursday 2 June 9.30am to 4pm
The Forum is set to play host to an event that celebrates The Broads, and the progress that has been made to help protect and enhance one of the country’s most important wetland areas. With plenty to do and see, this exhibition will help bring the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project and The Broads to life and is designed to encourage visitors to explore the unique environment on their doorstep.
In 2001, Broadland Environmental Services (BESL), a company owned by contractor Bam Nuttall and consultant Halcrow, was tasked by the Environment Agency to deliver a 20 year project to provide a range of flood defence improvements, maintenance and emergency response services within the tidal areas of the Rivers Yare, Bure, Waveney and their tributaries. June 2011 marks ten years of the Broadland Flood Alleviation Project and the project’s half way mark.
Sponsored by Halcrow and Bam Nuttall, Norwich’s ‘Ten years of protecting The Broads - for communities, for wildlife, for you’ event provides a unique insight into the progress that has been made by the Environment Agency and BESL. The project team will also be joined by a number of key local organisations, all of whom help bring The Broads to life. Visitors to the event will experience:
- an insight into the improvement works over the last ten years. See how wildlife has been protected, learn about flood alleviation and find out what the next ten years has in store
- a Broads Authority display on its work and how best to access, explore and enjoy The Broads
- an insight into the Environment Agency’s work on flood risk management and the fishing opportunities in The Broads
- information on Norfolk and Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves and how to experience them
- an interactive science area for children and lots of information about how people can get out and enjoy The Broads.
- a display of aerial photographs from acclaimed local photographer Mike Page
- examples of Broad Depth Furniture Designs’ hardwood furniture hand crafted from wood piles reclaimed from the River Ant
- how The Nancy Oldfield Trust helps disabled as well as socially disadvantaged people experience the freedom and adventure out on The Broads.
Representatives from each of the organisations will be on hand to explain their work and answer questions. The event is scheduled for school half-term so all the family can enjoy the exhibition.
