As part of its commitment to meet the Scottish Government’s challenging carbon reduction targets, Halcrow has acquired a new fleet of vehicles that combined with service efficiencies will halve its carbon emissions.
The fleet of eight Skoda Octavias will be used by Halcrow staff on the Performance Audit Group commission for client Transport Scotland. At 119g/km these will deliver a 25 per cent carbon reduction over previous vehicles. More efficient working will deliver similar savings.
Halcrow’s technical and sustainability manager for the project, Eddie McDowell said:
“This is a real step change in reducing our travel carbon emissions; our choice of vehicle was driven by our aim to meet the Government’s carbon reduction agenda. This fleet emits a quarter less carbon than our previous cars. This fuel efficiency also means we will generate business savings as well as environmental benefits – it’s a win-win situation.”
The Halcrow team monitors the performance of the trunk road Operating Companies BEAR Scotland, Scotland TranServ and Amey. The new cars are equipped with state-of-the-art video and GPS technology to ensure Halcrow is able to inspect the trunk roads and road works efficiently.
“Our total carbon saving will be 21 tonnes a year, equivalent to five fully grown elephants!”
Halcrow’s strong sustainability credentials were instrumental in its success at winning the Performance Audit Group commission for a third consecutive time. The company has recently won awards for its work with Scottish schools and encourages sustainable business travel and commuting for its staff.
