As a major boost to tourism the Al Bateen district of Abu Dhabi is being redeveloped.
Highlighting the seafaring heritage of Abu Dhabi theTourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) project will include a signature waterfront destination, modern marina and a luxury five-star hotel.
Halcrow, with assistance from International Marine Consultants (IMC), developed several concept masterplan layouts.
In addition Halcrow was commissioned to undertake engineering design, procurement assistance and construction supervision for the works.
The civil marine engineering works include:
- dewatering and excavation
- works within the existing tidal inlet to provide sufficient draught for small fishing boats and racing dhowl
- construction of mass concrete quay wall
- installation of pontoons to accommodate 323 fishing boats, racing dhowl and other medium sized vessels
- dredging and reclamation
As part of this project, Halcrow undertook direct measurement of water levels, as well as currents and waves within the marina to support the creation and calibration of the hydrodynamic numerical model. The modelling indicated that for a development of this type the water exchange needed to be improved. It was recommended that a connecting culvert be constructed between the east and west basin to promote the water exchange.
