Halcrow is helping deliver the largest road project in Sharjah, providing services from concept design through to construction management.
Part of the King Abdul Aziz road improvement scheme, the Halcrow-designed Al Wahda road section opened ahead of schedule in August 2009.
Halcrow redesigned the underpass – reducing the excavation depth – resulting in significant time savings for the construction programme.
Comprehensive traffic management was integral to the project’s success, as the entire area was closed to traffic during construction. Halcrow designed three-lane detour routes stretching 8km from the site, as well as widening existing roads through the surrounding industrial zone.
The team seamlessly upgraded 15km of urban dual carriageways from two to three lanes and transformed nine junctions from roundabouts to signalised intersections. A traffic police office was established on-site to monitor and ease traffic flows through the detour routes, as well as working closely with the engineering teams on all traffic management issues.
Due for completion in 2010, the scheme will boast the emirate’s first three-level interchange and the first single-point diamond interchange, significantly improving traffic flow in and around the city.
