This groundbreaking public-private policy-initiative (PPP) has become a central part of Bangkok's transport network, reducing traffic congestion and consequently generating on-going economic growth.
The Bangkok Transit System is a heavy rail dual track elevated railway approximately 23.5km in length with 24 stations and one interchange station. It consists of two lines, the Silom and the Sukhumvit Line with an approximate length of 6.5 and 17kms respectively.
Halcrow PDI was contracted by Italian-Thai Development Public Co. Ltd. (ITD) for the preliminary and detailed design of the mainline and the stations.
Key factors in Halcrow's work on this important project were:
- the preparation of geotechnical designs and reports
- designing the elevated dual track heavy rail system above heavily-used existing multilane roadways throughout the city
- designing and positioning elevated stations at key points in the city for maximum usage
The structure consists of the deck, single-column piers, portal frames and cantilevered piers which are supported on cast-in-place bored piles and pile caps.
The project was delivered to specification and opened in 1999 and has remained heavily-used by the Bangkok population to date.
