Bridges asset management, Worcestershire

Key facts

Client:
Worcestershire County Council
Country:
United Kingdom
We undertook comprehensive asset management data collection and implemented a bridge management system

To assist in managing Worcestershire’s 1,600 highway structures in the most efficient manner, keeping them safe for use and fit for purpose, the county council called on Halcrow’s expertise.

We undertook comprehensive asset management data collection and implemented a bridge management system, providing a longer-term view for planning and programing improvement works.

Efficiencies have been achieved by co-ordinating bridge refurbishment with road resurfacing, for example, reducing road disruption for the public. The bridge condition indicators from the inspection program are being used for targeted bridge maintenance.

The project enables the council to track performance against defined levels of service, as well as improve decision making and enhance management of financial and operational risk.

An example of this is the Stourport Bridge Refurbishment which was awarded an Institution of Civil Engineers Historic Bridge and Infrastructure Award 2008 for the exceptional skill and care applied to its design and execution.
