Commissioned in the late 1980s by Abu Dhabi’s then-ruler, construction began on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan Mosque – the world’s sixth largest – in 1996.
In 2001, Halcrow took on the role of construction supervisor for the project’s first phase – the structural shell – working closely with the Italian contractor, Impregilo.
During phase two Halcrow acted as project consultant up to the building’s completion in late 2007, when the 22,000m2 mosque first opened its doors for up to 40,000 worshipers.

As well as structural and architectural design, we were responsible for reviewing other consultants’ designs and construction supervision – maintaining exceptionally high standards. Our site management team streamlined communication between the client, project manager and contractor, resulting in greater understanding and increased engagement.
With its 82 domes and four minarets standing over 100m high the Grand Mosque is a truly world-class landmark, with visitors of all nationalities and faiths invited to share its splendour.
