Regeneration of Edinburgh gateway.

Halcrow helped City of Edinburgh Council to plan for the transformation of Scotland's fourth busiest railway station into a major, fit-for-purpose gateway into Edinburgh city centre – a world heritage site.

Passenger demand for Haymarket station is forecast to more than double to nine million passengers per year by 2031, more than it can accommodate. The station is a bus and rail interchange for Edinburgh city centre, and will incorporate a tram stop by 2011.

Project challenges and goals

  • to create a larger station with adequate facilities to cope with increasing passenger numbers
  • to identify commercial development opportunities
  • to create new station concept plans
  • to assess how various transport facilities would fit together
  • to develop proposals for substantial adjacent land holdings
  • to assess the cost and construction timeline for each phase
  • Outcomes and achievements
  • a strategy to accommodate growth in Edinburgh and regenerate one of the city’s key gateways for long-term usage and growth
