As the main venues make their mark on the Olympic Park skyline, we are also seeing the essential new infrastructure that will link them together taking shape. These new networks of roads and bridges are already transforming the once fragmented Olympic Park site, creating new links for construction activity and providing the building blocks for an open and accessible Park in 2012 and beyond.

When London won the right to hold the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Delivery Partner to the Olympic Delivery Authority sought engineering expertise from Halcrow to manage the design and delivery of infrastructure across the Olympic Park to a very tight schedule.

Halcrow has provided key engineering management, to enable the on-time delivery of the Olympic Park, focusing on the road and utility infrastructure.

Within the Olympic Park, this has included the temporary road network required to enable delivery of the venues, the loop road network for Games-time and the legacy transformation of what will be known as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. In addition, Halcrow’s engineers have been managing the adaptations to the roads around the Olympic Park, so that they also provide the connections needed for Olympic Park construction, Games-time and legacy transformation.

Halcrow’s role

Halcrow’s engineers have been at the forefront of delivery of the Olympic Park. The services we provided include:

  • Identifying the infrastructure requirements to hold the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and how these can be adapted to serve Legacy Transformation;
  • Management of the design and delivery of infrastructure;
  • Managing the design, approvals, delivery and operation of junction and carriageway works outside the Olympic Park, to put it into construction, pre-Games, Games-time and legacy modes;
  • Managing the road network across the Olympic Park, including protection of assets;
  • Traffic signal design and installation management
