The delivery of the Olympic Park been likened to delivery of a project twice the size of terminal 5 in half the time

When the delivery of the Olympic Park needed expertise across the full range of engineering fields, the ODA Delivery Partner, CLM, turned to Halcrow to provide the right expertise at the right time.

Halcrow has provided the engineering expertise to the Logistics team responsible for the movement of people and materials required to build the Olympic Park, a project which has been likened to the greatest movement of resources seen in the UK since the second world war.

Halcrow’s team has provided the expertise required to ensure the delivery of people and construction traffic; devising, implementing, reviewing and updating the complex traffic and people management plans. This has included managing the identification of strategic physical infrastructure around the Olympic Park and further afield to deal with:

  • An ever-changing construction workforce of up to 7,000 people per day entering and leaving the Olympic Park construction site;
  • Vehicle movements into, and around,  the Olympic Park, which at peak run at a vehicle every 15 seconds;
  • Designing the adaptations to the road network across the Olympic Park to ensure that materials and people reach the right place at the right time.

Halcrow’s role

Halcrow is specialist engineers have providing the transport engineering and management advice to ensure that the Olympic Park is delivered on-time and on-budget. The services we provided include:

  • Forecasting workforce impacts on the transport network, including managing station modelling;
  • Preparation and updating the Olympic Park site-wide Construction Travel Plan;
  • Implementation and monitoring travel to work initiatives; 
  • Managing the design, approvals, construction and operation of freight logistics centres, junction works and security screening plazas;
  • Design of temporary road infrastructure within the Olympic Park;

Management of the road network, across an area the size of Hyde Park, so that it is operated safely.
