This building forms part of MediaCityUK, a development by Peel Media Limited (PML) that will ultimately occupy over 80 hectares of land in Salford Quays. Phase 1, which comprises the redevelopment of some 15 hectares of brownfield site, is currently one of the largest privately funded developments in Europe and includes new state-of-the-art facilities for anchor tenant, the BBC.
The University of Salford has decided to relocate its Arts and Media faculties to MediaCityUK and, on the basis of securing this tenant, PML is developing an additional building as part of the Phase 1 works. Halcrow Yolles is providing civil and structural engineering services for this building which, over its 13 storeys, will provide 25,000m2 of BCO category A office space and 2,000m2 of retail space. The lower four floors of the building are pre-let to the University of Salford.
The building is constructed from a reinforced concrete frame utilizing post-tensioned slabs to achieve clear spans up to 14m whilst minimizing overall material use. In addition to the structural services provided by Halcrow Yolles, Halcrow provided additional services such as the design of underground drainage and geo-environmental studies in connection with the foundation design and ground contamination issues.
Halcrow Yolles is working closely with architect Sheppard Robson on the project.
