Halcrow’s broad-ranging involvement at Middlehaven includes project management and the planning, design and delivery of major infrastructure and reclamation

Halcrow has had a long relationship with Teesside Development Corporation and the Middlehaven redevelopment, which incorporates the disused Middlesbrough Dock and the surrounding vacant and contaminated land.

We have now delivered all the major infrastructure on the 30ha site, enabling urban regeneration company Tees Valley Regeneration to take forward its plans to generate £200 million of inward investment, 1,000 new jobs, 750 homes and 100,000m² of development floor space.

The Middlehaven concept dates back to 1989, when the site was acquired by the Teesside Development Corporation. The project really began to move forward in 1995 when Middlesbrough Football Club relocated to the site.

Halcrow’s broad-ranging involvement at Middlehaven includes project management and the planning, design and delivery of major infrastructure and reclamation.

We worked on the planning for the first phase of infrastructure works and contaminated land appraisal for the new Riverside Stadium on a former petrochemical storage facility. To improve stadium access, we designed the £1 million Dockside Road extension and a £4.5 million, four-span bridge, crossing road and rail corridors and a water course.

In Middlesbrough Dock, we designed the first phase of the £4 million remediation works, including new sheet-pile walls. We designed a pedestrian swing bridge across the dock and provided the concept design for a £20 million Tall Ships facility.

Other projects include the £9 million cargo fleet interchange on the A66 at Middlehaven, providing strategic access to the dock development.
