Halcrow has been working in Argentina for more than 15 years establishing a strong reputation for providing services for all aspects of projects in the hydroelectrical power sector.

Peñas Blancas concrete dam is located 7 km downstream of the hydroelectric power station Cabra Corral in the Province of Salta on the Juramento River. The 12.60m high dam works as a compensation dam for the operation of Cabra Corral, regulating the daily downstream flows.

Halcrow was commissioned to carry out a feasibility study for the construction of a new hydroelectric power station retrofitted within the existing structure of the Peñas Blancas compensation. The power station would comprise two vertical axial turbines with an installed capacity of 5 MW.

Additionally the study analysed the feasibility of raising the dam up to 1.5m, by the installation of an inflatable rubber dam bolted to the existing spillway sill.
