Halcrow Yolles was responsible for the option appraisal, conceptual design and creation of the performance specifications for the civil and structural engineering aspects of two hotels constructed within a green belt adjacent to Manchester Airport.
Various structural systems were appraised to determine the most appropriate solutions for the frames in terms of cost effectiveness, constructability, programme and sustainability.
Hotel 2, a 210 bedroom hotel, was constructed using a modular framed solution to reduce the amount of site waste, a major contributor to landfill waste. The sustainability credentials were further enhanced with the inclusion of a sustainable urban drainage system.
Hotel 3 (169 bedrooms) comprised a steel frame with composite decking in order to reduce the overall construction period for the hotel. Bathroom pods were integrated into the design to reduce the risk to the programme.
Both schemes achieved a 'very good' standard within the BREEAM environmental assessment method.
