Halcrow helped the Smarter Travel Richmond workplace travel planning team towards meeting its target of 20,000 employees covered by an active travel plan by autumn 2011.
Smarter Travel Richmond is an integrated travel behavioural change and social marketing programme taking place over two and a half years. It is being delivered in partnership by Transport for London and the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
Project challenges and goals:
- Identify contacts and obtain buy-in to the scheme from large offices, retailers and other workplaces
- Help businesses conduct surveys, set travel objectives and targets and develop and agree an action plan
- Provide confidence to the Smarter Travel Richmond workplace travel planning team that we could help them make good progress towards meeting their target
Halcrow’s role
We engaged with over 50 large businesses to obtain their initial commitment to develop a plan and then support them through the stages of developing a travel plan, from conducting staff surveys, to producing an individual travel plan document with unique targets and an action plan. This provided employees with wider travel options to help contribute to the target of a 5 per cent increase in levels of cycling, walking and public transport in the borough.
Halcrow delivered
We provided site-specific advice to assist these businesses in completing travel plans for their site. Businesses engaged received a number of incentives including free travel advice, marketing materials, travel passes and cycle stands, match funding for improvements, and smarter driving lessons for employees.
Outcomes and achievements:
- We successfully engaged over 1,200 employees in four months.
- Around 600 employees covered by a completed travel plan and the remainder within businesses working towards completing a plan.
