Halcrow has been working in Peru since the early 1980s mainly on transportation, maritime and sanitation projects.
Peru has seen impressive economic growth in the last decade which has led to significant investment in infrastructure projects.
The Road Network 4 and Sol Highway schemes are two separate projects in an ambitious programme to create a dual carriageway on the 2,400km Peruvian section of the Panamerica highway system of almost unbroken interlinking national roads which runs the length of North and South America.
Both sections of the road are heavily used by trucks carrying import and export produce. The Road Network 4 project covers 362km between Trujillo and Patvilica and involved building a ring road in Chimbote. Stretching north from Trujillo to Sullana, the Sol Highway project covered 469km. Both contracts were worth about £35,000 to Halcrow.
The client selected us to carry out traffic and revenue analysis of the two projects to support their bid for the road concessions because of our wide experience in similar studies of toll roads in Latin America. Our analysis included a macroeconomic analysis of the projects’ potential impact and an assessment of the link between growth in demand and economic growth.
It is projected that upgrading the roads will reduce travel times as well as cutting the number of accidents. The dual carriageway system should also help integrate Peru’s regions and competitiveness by boosting the growth of new markets.
