The lifespan of Northern Ireland Railway’s 40-year-old vehicles has been extended by five years as a result of a Halcrow-led project, with the company taking in overall responsibility for the cars’ refurbishment, overhaul and upgrade.

Modern safety systems have been designed and installed to fit the Class 80 diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) power cars, enabling the vehicles to meet the standards of a modern railway. The cars also underwent a full refit and extensive repairs to both the interior and exterior, ensuring high service levels for a further five years.

Our scope of supply covers the design, testing, approvals and certification, while project managing the manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning of the vehicles through our sub-suppliers. Halcrow retains full commercial responsibility for this project.
