Our work in Saudi Arabia ranges from port and maritime work to master planning and environmental studies.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Halcrow was primarily involved in port developments and now we are looking to help support the Kingdom’s growing population through the provision of infrastructure, housing and environmental services.
Our operations in Saudi Arabia are led by one of Halcrow’s most senior directors, Jim Fyvie. A chartered civil engineer based in Saudi Arabia, Jim has over 20 years’ experience in the Middle East and specialises in primary infrastructure, major projects and business strategy.
Some of the projects we have been involved with include:
Jeddah Islamic Port
With studies starting in 1964, and construction three years later, Halcrow was responsible for the planning, design and construction supervision. Almost 40 years on, Halcrow continues to support the port’s development by increasing its capacity and enhancing its capability, helping Jeddah Islamic Port become an engine of growth for Saudi Arabia’s economy.
Port of Jubail
Halcrow’s commission to develop Port of Jubail, one of the Kingdom’s biggest construction projects and with both commercial and industrial harbours, started in 1974. Some two years later the first two berths were operational. By 1980, the project had been completed.
Wadi Jizan
Water has always been a scarce and extremely valuable resource in Saudi Arabia. From 1971 to 1983, Halcrow developed 40km of canals and supporting irrigation systems to supply water to 6000ha of land in the south west of the country.
King Abdulaziz International Airport
In 2006, Halcrow was appointed to act as an advisor by one of the consortia bidding for the operation and development of the Hajj Terminal Complex at King Abdulaziz International Airport. The commission involved an independent review of traffic demand, and of forecast commercial revenues and capital expenditure for the client’s proposals for the redeveloped Hajj Terminals.
