Innovation awards

Halcrow has received the corporate citizenship award for innovation at the Quality Scotland Scottish awards for business excellence 2010. The accolade comes following the company's recent success at the Sustainable Scotland summit held by royal charity Scottish Business in the Community, where its sustainable travel plan won a sustainable travel award.

The Scottish awards for business excellence are described the most rigorous and prestigious business awards in Scotland. Open to any Scottish organisation from the private, public or voluntary sector, the awards are recognised across the UK and Europe as a mark of outstanding business excellence.

Halcrow has adopted a number of sustainable practices in Scotland - including the sustainable travel plan - and has taken an active and creative role in developing and implementing solutions to bring real benefits to business, environment and the community.

Washlands Flood Storage Area improvement scheme, Dagenham, UK

The project involved innovative techniques such as deep dry cement mixing beneath the embankments to improve the geotechnical characteristics of the peat material.

Materials gained from off-site works were used to improve the stability of the embankments, increasing the sustainability of the project.

The Bay Adelaide Centre, West Tower, Canada

The centre, a 1.1 million ft², 51-storey commercial office tower located in downtown Toronto, Canada, includes four below-grade levels of retail space and is connected to an extensive underground pedestrian walkway called the ‘PATH’.

Halcrow provided structural engineering services for this impressive tower.

Alkborough Flats scheme in Lincolnshire, estuarine managed retreat project, UK

This was a priority site, identified with the primary objective to provide a sustainable solution to flood risk management (by reducing the need for work at other locations in the Estuary), whilst creating new intertidal habitat.
