Martin Knights

With over 40 years’ experience, Martin has an extensive international background across a wide spectrum of industries, including rail, highways, power and general underground structures. He has also provided input into the underground works to support the LHC Project at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Switzerland.

Martin was President of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) from 2007 to 2010 and is a Member of the British Tunnelling Society (BTS) Committee. He has been a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers since 1994, is a Member of the USA’s Underground Construction Association and Chairman of international Symposia, Congresses and Conferences on the Tunnelling Industry.

In 2010, he was awarded the BTS James Clark Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the national and international tunnelling industry. Martin has written and presented over 50 technical papers on tunnelling.

He has recently undertaken technical peer reviews for Rio Metro Line 4, tunnelling aspects of the Thames Water London Tideway Tunnels Project and acted as Expert Panel member for tunnels, shafts and stations for London’s Crossrail project. He is currently the technical moderator for the evaluation of the Brazil High Speed Railway Project (TAV).
