ICE Thomas Brassey Awards

Two Halcrow projects have celebrated success at this year’s Thomas Brassey Awards for 2009.

The awards are the highest honour for civil engineering excellence in the Kent and East Sussex region.

Halcrow’s Darent Valley Path Improvements in Dartford, Kent, received the Community Award with the Lullingstone Gauging Station Improvement Works at Lullingstone Castle in Eynsford, Kent, receiving highly commended in the water category.

Award categories included Transport, Water, Innovation and Community and all entries were required to have been substantially completed in the last twelve months.

Projects were judged on criteria such as the technical challenges involved, sustainability and engagement with the community.

Thames Valley Engineering Excellence Awards

Two Halcrow projects have celebrated success at this year’s Thames Valley Engineering Awards for 2009, both in the environmental project category.

Halcrow’s River Lambourn Restoration in Newbury won the category, with the Grafton Lock Refurbishment in Lechlade, Highly Commended.

The awards recognise excellence in civil engineering projects completed in the last year that reflects the ICE’s global vision of: “Civil engineers at the heart of society, delivering sustainable development through knowledge, skills and professional expertise”. Judgements on engineering excellence were based on criteria such as creativity and innovation, sustainability and environmental sensitivity and benefits to the client and wider public.

Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) south west and Central Florida chapter’s gold project achievement award.

Jacksonville’s Dames Point Container Terminal has scooped the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) south west and Central Florida chapter’s gold project achievement award.

Halcrow was brought in as lead consultant to help deliver Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT)'s flagship facility - one of the largest container ports on the US east coast. The team gained the necessary permits and designed and managed construction in an intense 42-month programme, finishing on time and within budget.

Project manager Paul Starr, construction manager Jack Belt, document controller Herman Floyd and inspector Sebastien Templeton were on hand to celebrate the prestigious award at a presentation dinner in Tampa on 12 May.

During the evening Halcrow was strongly encouraged by the judging panel to submit the project for CMAA’s national project achievement awards.

ACE Engineering Ambassador Award

Halcrow Yolles’s Neil Currie won the Engineering Ambassador Award at the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) Engineering Excellence Awards last week.

The awards recognise ACE-member-company projects and people that demonstrate a high degree of achievement, value and engineering excellence.

The Engineering Ambassador Award is a specialised award that recognises and celebrates an individual who has made a significant contribution to raising the profile of consultancy and engineering.

Based in Manchester, Neil is a technical manager responsible for the development of innovative engineering solutions within Halcrow Yolles. These are shared with teams worldwide, through the company’s intranet, lunchtime seminars and presentations.

Neil promotes innovation and integrates technical excellence into the projects that he works on. His passion for engineering is evidenced by his many award-winning projects and ongoing client praise and appreciation. Practised in communicating engineering principles in simple and clear English, he is a regular after-dinner speaker and recently presented at the Imperial College on engineering simplicity. Neil also actively promotes the IstructE, for which he is a company mentor and a volunteer interviewer.

2009 Waterways Renaissance Awards, UK

Halcrow celebrated a triple project win at The Waterways Renaissance Awards run by The Waterways Trust and British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA), which recognise best practice in sustainable waterway regeneration and development throughout the UK.

The historic Foxton Locks and Inclined Plane site in Leicestershire not only won the historic environment award and a commendation in the design and construction category, but stole the show when it was presented with the prestigious outstanding achievement award.

Halcrow scooped BURA's innovation achievement award for its team role on the Washlands Flood Storage Area improvement scheme in Dagenham.

Completing the hat trick, Halcrow also walked off with the flood defence award for its work on the Boscastle Valency flood defence scheme.
