Halcrow bags two at ICE North West awards

On 2 February 2007, Halcrow took joint first place in the community award category at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North West Awards dinner for its prestigious Liverpool South Parkway (LSP) project.

The Community Award recognises innovation, sustainability and potential benefits for travellers. The project shared the honours with Manchester City Council’s Safer Routes to School programme.

The £32 million LSP interchange is spearheading the regeneration of South Liverpool and the area around Speke, Garston and John Lennon Airport, improving transportation throughout the region.

Halcrow, as lead consultant to Merseytravel, was responsible for outline and detailed design, technical support during construction, project co-ordination and planning supervision. Other companies involved included Jefferson Sheard, EC Harris, Network Rail and contractor Edmund Nuttall.

LSP is based on Allerton railway station on the West Coast Mainline and included the relocation of Garston Station on the Northern Line to a site close to Allerton. A multi-level interchange building links the two stations, enabling the easy transfer of passengers using regional and national rail services to local bus and train services, taxis and a dedicated bus service to the airport. The overall design allows for seamless integration between the various modes of transport.

“This is an excellent win for Halcrow and Merseytravel. It recognises the social value of the work we do and demonstrates that it’s not always about steel and concrete,” said Halcrow’s project manager Steve Hogg.

Halcrow was also highly commended in the merit category at the awards ceremony for its work on the M60 widening project between junctions five to eight.

The £139.5 million Halcrow-designed project to widen the motorway in greater Manchester was constructed by an AMEC/Alfred McAlpine joint venture and was completed on time over a three-year construction period.

“The M60 widening was delivered with minimum disruption to road users,” noted the judges, who said the innovation behind the Stretford Tip and the lifting of the bridges at junction six while keeping the motorway open stood out.

ICE president Quentin Leiper was on hand to present the awards as part of his annual two-day visit to the region.
