Halcrow appointed for Bognor Regis transport studies
Halcrow has been appointed as transport and highways consultants on a £100m mixed use scheme in West Sussex.
Halcrow was appointed by St Modwen, the developer chosen by Arun District Council, for the regeneration of two key town centre sites in Bognor Regis.
The scheme will deliver in excess of 200,000 sq ft of leisure and retail, 50,000 sq ft of community uses, 30,000 sq ft of offices, around 300 residential units and extensive public realm landscaping, including the closure of the town’s seafront Esplanade.
Keith Bull, market sector director for Halcrow’s 300 strong transport planning team, and project director said:
“We are delighted to have been appointed for this exciting development, which we believe will transform Bognor Regis into a vibrant south coast town. There is a real opportunity to achieve significant sustainable transport solutions, including the potential closure of The Esplanade linking the town to the sea.&rdquo
To this end, Halcrow is producing a new transport model of the town centre, and is currently collecting traffic data including carrying out a survey of 700 households to establish travel habits and patterns, on which to build the traffic model. The results will inform St Modwen’s infrastructure design proposals and, most importantly, its transport strategy, which will form a significant part of the future planning applications. The first stage proposals for the scheme, including initial highway options, will be presented to the public for consultation in early 2008.
This work is being undertaken in partnership with both Arun District Council and supported by the Highway Authority, West Sussex County Council.
