Porth Relief Road scoops Ground Engineering Award

Halcrow came up trumps in the ‘Public sector project over £1 million’ category at the inaugural Ground Engineering Awards, for its work on Porth Relief Road in South Wales.

The Welsh Assembly Government funded Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to deliver the project which was the UK’s largest investment in the highway network by any local authority at the time. The win is the culmination of over ten year’s involvement in the scheme.

The award citation stated that ‘since its opening in December 2006, the new £98 million, 8km-long Porth Relief Road has improved access to the Rhondda Valley and enhanced links for cyclists and pedestrians with a new community route and enhanced public transport routes’.

The judges said; “The team overcame a range of ground engineering related issues with innovation and good practice, and clearly displayed teamwork to make large value engineering savings and keep ahead of the timetable. The clients were highly satisfied with the project which will enable regeneration of a wide area.”

The new awards recognise ground engineering’s contribution to industry achievements and celebrate the importance of geotechnics and its ability to demonstrate innovation, sustainability and value engineering. The integrated, multi-disciplinary and cross-business group team was led by Halcrow’s project director Dean Maddison and project manager Paul Maiphant, who celebrated the award with other team members from Glamorgan Engineering Consultancy, Costain and Walters UK.

In addition, Halcrow Yolles was part of the team that took the runner-up spot in the category, for the Rochester Riverside project, working with Edmund Nuttall and client the South East England Development Agency.
