Halcrow sponsors major sustainability event
Halcrow sponsored a high profile Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) event about sustainable development called SDUK 08 – action today, protecting tomorrow on 6 March.
The conference was a sell-out with over 500 delegates from across central and local government and industry. They heard government and business proposals to promote sustainable communities and address key challenges associated with climate change and resource depletion.
While exhibiting Halcrow’s know-how and skills in sustainable development, Robin Hickman, Mark Browning and Olu Ashiru from the consulting business group also ran a workshop on the role of the transport sector in reducing CO2 emissions. Halcrow’s cutting-edge work in this area was demonstrated using an interactive game - the transport and carbon simulator (TC-SIM).
Delegates helped determine policy priorities - on issues such as hybrid vehicles, alternative fuels, road pricing, urban planning, freight logistics, air travel and carbon rationing - and judged progress against headline CO2 reduction targets.
The workshops were extremely popular, with over 100 delegates attending. Many reported that the simulation game provided a structured approach to address a complex and challenging subject. Robin and Mark have had follow on requests to do more demonstrations at various Government departments, in the UK and overseas.
