Halcrow to advise on new Brunei port

Halcrow has signed an agreement with the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) to provide advisory services for the construction of the new Pulau Muara Besar port in Brunei. Halcrow’s services will look to promote Pulau Muara Besar as a competitive port in one on the world’s largest sea trading routes.

The agreement follows a five month feasibility study carried out by Halcrow in 2003. Due to the growth in high volume global container shipments, the study identified Brunei as a viable and strategic location on the East-West shipping route.

Richard Clarke, Halcrow’s director for ports and dockyards, commented “We’re please to receive this commission and believe that the development of a major container terminal in Brunei has a good prospect for success. We’ll take the project forward with enthusiasm”.

The project will be completed in several stages with a total cost of US$1.7 billion. The first stage will see development of part of the port should the project be successful and meet projected expectations the later phases will be instigated. No timings have yet been released.

The BEDB’s assistant chief executive, Mr Lim Hong Hin, suggested that 70% of the funding will be obtained from the Brunei government, with the remaining 30% coming from a partner.
