First breakthrough for Panxi Expressway tunnels

The Panxi Expressway Project in Sichuan province in south west China has celebrated its first tunnel breakthrough. The 150km long expressway is being constructed for the Sichuan Panxi Expressway Company Ltd, as part of the Southern Sichuan Roads Development Project, and will connect Xichang with Panzhihua in the south of Sichuan.

The southern part of the route is through impressive mountainous terrain requiring 14 twin two-lane tunnels to be constructed. At the present time approximately 40 separate tunnel drives are under construction in a wide range of geological conditions.

The project is being funded by the Government of the PR of China with the assistance of a loan from the Asian Development Bank, and is due for completion in late 2006. Halcrow is providing specialist technical advice and assistance with construction supervision.
