Halcrow-led team to improve Romanian water network

A Halcrow-led consortium has won a €2.5 million (£1.7 million) European Union (EU) funded contract to provide construction supervision services for the extension and rehabilitation of the water and wastewater networks in the Romanian city of Satu Mare.

Part of the EU’s Instrument for Structural Policies for Pre-Accession (ISPA) programme, the works will bring the city’s drinking water and wastewater treatment facilities up to EU standards.

The team is working alongside joint venture partners SWECO of Sweden and is being supported by local partners. “We’re working in close association with the recently-established local water company,” says project director Martyn Davis. “Our approach to the project, which includes on-the-job and formal training sessions, will ensure improved company performance and provide a framework for the efficient operation and maintenance of the new and upgraded facilities.”

This win follows Halcrow’s continuing supervision work on another EU funded project in Braila where the team is half way through a five-year contract to bring modern sewerage to 40,000 people, while improving the quality of wastewater discharged into the River Danube.

Initial work on the latest project has already started and will be completed in 2008.
