Halcrow project wins UK sustainability award

Halcrow's work on the eco-friendly Kindersley Centre has been recognised by the Civic Trust, a charity working with people to promote thriving towns and villages. In a ceremony held earlier this month the project was awarded the Special Award for Sustainability 2005.

Antony Bursey, head of Halcrow's sustainable development team was at the ceremony in Brighton where the award was collected. "I'm delighted. We worked very hard on this project and it has all paid off."

Hailed as a "triumph" by the Prince of Wales who visited in 2004, the centre is part of an 800ha farm complex at Lambourn in Berkshire and stands in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Halcrow designed the low-energy building services for the project which promotes organic farming and biodiversity and includes conference, study and education spaces, a library, shop and restaurant, in addition to farm offices.

Sustainability was crucial to the client's brief and the team made a great effort to minimise environmental impact.
"Carbon dioxide emissions are less than half of those for comparable buildings and the design and uses local and sustainable materials as far as practicable," explains Antony. "We were careful to design all the building services installations to integrate with the look and feel of the building fabric and in sympathy with the overall design."

Halcrow's team, including project manager Roland Asbridge, worked closely with Alec French Architects, Mark Lovell Design Engineers and quantity surveyors Gleeds to deliver this award winning project.
