School Transport - Meeting the Challenges

Halcrow in association with PTRC is holding a one day conference on school transport.

To be held on Tuesday 1 February at One Birdcage Walk, London, the conference will focus on the upcoming challenges facing those involved in school transport.

Sian Thornthwaite, Halcrow’s associate director for transport planning explains, “Home to school transport provision by the local education authorities in the UK now accounts for approximately £1 billion per annum expenditure, and this continues to rise. However, with growing congestion, pressure on budgets and the recognition of the need to reduce car usage for the school journey, school transport has been taking a higher profile in recent years.” She continues, “This conference will focus on the upcoming challenges facing those involved in school transport - the challenges of: greater inclusion, flexible learning, extended school day, local government changes including the move to children's services and the widening role of the Learning and Skills Council; as well as the ongoing challenges of reducing congestion, potential charging and managing pupil behaviour.”

With over 100 people expected to attend the conference, session speakers include Stephen Twigg (Minister of State for School Standards); Tony Page (Local Government Association); Patricia Hayes (Department for Transport); Donald Macdonald (Department for Transport); and Jen Camillin and Hanna Luce (Next Stop Theatre Project).
