Halcrow plans for Station Quarter Gateway, Peterborough
Working with Peterborough City Council, Halcrow has produced plans for a dynamic new £500 million gateway to Peterborough on 54 acres (22 hectares) of mostly derelict and under-used land surrounding the city’s rail station.
The Station Quarter will be one of the largest components in a ‘master plan’ of major developments that are planned to ensure that the city centre retains a powerful presence as Peterborough undergoes rapid growth over the next 20 years.
The plans include a ‘land bridge’ linking the shopping centre – including the proposed £250 million North Westgate development – with new business, residential and other developments that are earmarked for land to the east and west of the existing East Coast rail line.
There will also be a new ‘double-sided’ rail station, new bus station, underground car parking beneath elevated pedestrian squares, new road infrastructure and provision for a new venue/cultural centre.
The plans, in the form of a development brief, have been prepared by Halcrow with Dutch company Urhahn Urban Design. They include:
- Up to 100,000 sq m of office development
- Up to 1,200 homes
- Up to 4,000 spaces in multi-storey and underground car parks for shoppers and rail commuters
- Up to 5,000 jobs.
Halcrow project manager, Steve Scott said: “This is a very important project in the context of Peterborough’s future growth. These proposals aim to give the city the gateway it deserves and to re-connect the rail station and its hinterland with the city centre.”
The 54-acre site is bounded by Bourges Boulevard to the east, Midland Road to the west, Mayor’s Walk to the north and Thorpe Road to the south. It also includes the existing station car park to the south of Crescent Bridge.
The public will be encouraged to inspect and comment on the development proposals at a mobile display in East Square, the Queensgate Centre, Peterborough, on 27 August and a foyer exhibition at the city council’s offices at Bayard Place, Broadway, from Monday 22 August to Thursday 15 September (weekdays 10 am to 4 pm).
