Halcrow commissions short listed for top awards

bci logoInformation released in advance of the British Construction Industry Awards (BCIA) has shown that, out of the 15 nominations for the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award, Halcrow has had input into three of the short listed projects.

The Prime Minister’s Award is a special category within the BCIA. Any entries to the BCIA that fulfil the relevant criteria are considered for the Prime Minister’s Award. The award is made annually to new projects commissioned by central or local government and paid mainly with public funds. It is part of the Better Public Building initiative launched by the Prime Minister in October 2000 to encourage the adoption of quality design principles in all new public sector developments, regardless of size and cost.

This is a major coup for Halcrow, and underpins our position as one of the UK’s leading consultancies.

The nominations in which Halcrow is involved are:

Small Civil Engineering Project Award

  • Boscastle Flood Defence Scheme
“This project is a good example of essential flood alleviation, produced in a discreet and well-designed manner."

  • Sladesbridge Flood Defence Scheme
"This is a good example of a project which is likely to become increasingly evident, given rising water tables and the effects of global warming."

Civil Engineering Award

  • A470 Cardiff to Glan Conwy Road, Wales
"With a great use of local materials and representing a very soft addition to the environment, this scheme shows that roads can also be specific to their geography."

The full list of nominations and comments on each can be found here: www.betterpublicbuildings.org.uk

Details on the BCIA awards and the award categories can be found here: www.bciawards.org.uk

Judges will shortly be visiting the sites and the winners will be announced at the awards dinner on 22 October. Details of all short-listed projects will also be published in the UK’s New Civil Engineer magazine and will feature in a special supplement published after the awards are announced
