Halcrow chairman awarded CBE
Halcrow’s chairman, Tony Allum, has been awarded a CBE for his services to British interests in Iraq, in The Queen’s Birthday Honours announced this week.
Tony Allum joined Halcrow in 1988. As director of the Halcrow’ overseas division, he was responsible for developing the company’s international business.
In 1996, Tony was appointed to Halcrow’s Group Board, and in 2002, he became chairman.
As chairman he is a member of the senior management team responsible for the company’s continuing development and growth. Successes have included the development of Halcrow’s international business and an increase in turnover from £186 million in 2002 to over £245 million in 2004. Within the same period employee numbers have increased from 3,400 to over 5,100. This progress is set to continue as Halcrow establishes its vision for 2010.
With a strong international perspective on all five continents, Tony has represented Halcrow and British interests throughout the globe. In 2003, Tony was appointed leader of the UK government’s Iraq Industry Working Group (IIWG), an initiative which promotes British involvement in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq. Working to support the IIWG’s programme, Tony led a number of delegations and was involved in negotiations in the Middle East, the UK and the US. As leader of the IIWG, Tony highlighted the need to develop Iraq’s health and education sectors, the work needed to improve the provision of water and power and the opportunity for Iraq to re-establish itself on the regional and world stage.
As well as his work with the IIWG, Tony is chairman of British Water; a director of the British Consultants and Construction Bureau (BCCB) and a deputy patron of the British Executive Service Overseas (BESO).
