Iconic bridge opens in Glasgow

The £20 million Clyde Arc Bridge in Glasgow was declared open by Scottish Enterprise Glasgow chairman Willie Haughey OBE at an official ceremony on 18 September.

The Halcrow-designed bridge provides the first new traffic link over the river for more than 30 years. It carries two lanes for public transport together with two lanes for other vehicles and links Finnieston near the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre on the north bank, to the Pacific Quay site on the south side. The 140m-span structure was built by contractor Edmund Nuttall.

Halcrow’s project director, Iain Salisbury, commented: “The setting of the bridge makes its visual appeal vitally important. The final blueprint is a simple, classic design which reflects Glasgow’s reputation as a city with style. Halcrow has a proud history of designing bridges across the Clyde and I’m proud to help design Glasgow’s first 21st-century bridge.”

Set to boost the regeneration of the riverside area of Glasgow, the bridge has been designed to cope with the addition of a light transport system, such as a tram, in the future.

At the opening ceremony Willie Haughey said: “Work to turn Pacific Quay into the city’s media and creative industry quarter is pushing ahead and this crossing will open up the site and the surrounding area to new development and investment opportunities.”
