Overview

Halcrow has a wide range of experience in sewage treatment using a variety of techniques depending on the discharge standard that the treated effluent is required to meet.

We have designed lagoons, ponds and trickling filters for the treatment of domestic sewage, landfill leachate through to highly advanced primary secondary and tertiary treatment processes for full biological nutrient removal (BNR).

Biological treatment

The focus of sewage and waste treatment is generally on the secondary treatment process. The mix of skills within the process team encompass all of the needs for municipal and industrial waste water treatment. This includes fixed film processes such as trickling filters, submerged aerated filters(SAFs), biological aerated filters(BAF’s), rotating biological contactors(RBC’s) and submerged biological contactors(SBC’s).

The conventional activated sludge process with final settlement tanks remains the mainstay of secondary treatment but there is growing application of suspended growth processes in sequencing batch reactors and the integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) systems which use suspended media to provide additional surface area for biomass growth to improve process performance.

These processes can be designed to remove nitrogen and phosphorus biologically. Correct knowledge and application of BNR (biological nutrient removal) processes are critical for effective sewage treatment compliant with the latest exacting quality standards.

Membrane bioreactors

Halcrow has experience of MBR (membrane bioreactor) technology for the removal of impurities such as bacteria, viruses, large molecular compounds and the production of an effluent suitable for irrigation and other forms of recycling in arid countries.

Tertiary treatment

Tertiary treatment processes have included rapid gravity filtration for solids removal, aerated filters for ammonia removal and ultraviolet disinfection of the treated effluent;
