Sludge treatment

Overview

Halcrow has maintained a high profile in the treatment and disposal of sludge. Halcrow has undertaken numerous detailed designs for solid processing plants and have assisted our clients in developing safety, procurement and disposal strategies. We also have particular expertise in sludge drying.

Design

These have involved thickening, dewatering, pasteurisation, mesophilic and thermophilic digestion, thermal drying and product handling plants. We have completed various projects both in the UK and worldwide.

Sludge treatment and disposal strategies

Halcrow has developed sludge treatment and disposal strategies in the Middle East, Europe and South America. The methodology is based on a Best Practice Environmental Option (BPEO) selection procedure and a value management approach.

Our involvement in sludge treatment and disposal ranges from the formulation of strategic disposal plans, environmental impact assessments and project management to dryer performance testing and HAZOP studies.

Sludge drying

Halcrow also has a particular experience with using sludge drying technology. From the first UK sludge drying installation, Bellozanne Sewage Treatment Works in Jersey, Halcrow has been intimately involved in numerous sludge drying projects. We have undertaken safety audits and assisted in design, planning and commissioning.

Sludge specialist work

Other sludge specialist work has included developing Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), performance testing of process efficiency including pathogen reduction, operational costs and energy (gas and electricity) consumption.
