Halcrow nuclear focus

Contact: John Ballantyne

Halcrow has delivered services to AWE for two years, including:

specialist seismic advice to the Assurance group
pegasus project – civil and structural design

In the Pegasus project, at AWE Aldermaston, Halcrow is responsible for the civil, structural and architectural aspect of this large complex multidisciplinary project. The project consists of the following major structural components:

receipt and dispatch store
process building
process annex
service building
entrance facilities and offices

Containment requirement, coupled with anti-terrorism measures, have resulted in all buildings, excluding the entrance facility and offices, having a concrete box structural form. To protect against water ingress, the concrete buildings have been clad with an aluminium weather envelope, supported off the concrete box by a steel framework.

The structures have been designed to withstand a range of extreme environmental and hazard loadings. Advanced structural analysis techniques and software have been employed to calculate these extreme loadings, the most onerous of which are seismic, temperature and blast impact.

Halcrow led an extensive programme of insitu geophysical testing and dynamic laboratory testing to ascertain the dynamic properties of the surrounding soil. These results were then used in advanced seismic soil structure interaction analysis.

Halcrow looks forward to continuing to work with AWE and its supply chain in delivering further innovative and successful projects.
