Halcrow nuclear focus

Contact: David Boyd

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority was formed in 2005 by the UK Government, to be responsible for clean up of the UK's civil nuclear liabilities. As such they have become the ultimate client for much of Halcrow's nuclear decommissioning business.

The NDA has set about introducing a new generation of commercial arrangements for managing the clean up of liabilities on the 20 nuclear licensed sites that they have taken ownership of. They intend to apply competition to the contracts for the management and operations (or closure) of all sites over the coming years (so called Tier 1 contracts).

Tier 1 contractors will, in turn, enter into contracts with the supply chain for the various activities needed to accomplish the clean up works including programmes of new build and demolition / deconstruction projects (so called Tier 2 and Tier 3 contracts).

Halcrow has positioned itself primarily as a Tier 2 supplier and is committed to supporting the NDA's mission. We are pleased to work directly for the NDA, for the Tier 1 contractors in partnership and alongside others. We are focussed on those technology areas where Halcrow can add value from our experience in the nuclear industry and can also provide benefit from the experience of Halcrow Group from across all fields of infrastructure provision, worldwide.

Halcrow has delivered numerous projects undertaken on behalf of the NDA, including:

2No. ILW stores, Hunterston 'A' and Hinkley Point 'A'
Long-term engineering substantiation at Harwell
Over 10 years support for Drigg LLW
UKAEA Dounreay - Multiple projects, including the Hydraulic isolation of the D1225 Shaft
