Since 1982, Nirex has been working to develop and advise on safe, environmentally sound and publicly acceptable options for the long-term management of radioactive material in the UK. In particular, implementing a strategy for safe disposal of low and intermediate-level waste.
The management of radioactive waste is a challenge that will extend into the far future. Recognising this, the UK government appointed an independent committee, CoRWM, to advise on the most appropriate solution to the UK’s growing stockpile of radioactive material. CoRWM announced in July 2006 that “..it had sufficient confidence in geological disposal as the best method for long-term management, and the relevant regulators believe that they could, in principle, accept a long-term safety case.” |
