Port Salalah, in the Sultanate of Oman, is protected by a 1.3 km long rubble-mound breakwater, armored with 10 to 20 tonnes dolosse. During a relatively severe monsoon season, a 100 m section of the 20-yr old breakwater sustained severe damage. At the request of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Office of Ports and Maritime Affairs, Halcrow was retained to assess the extent of the failure. The scope of work included detailed above and underwater inspections, followed by the design of repairs and the preparation of construction contract documents.

Highlights of the work included:

Complete above water inspection of the entire breakwater structure
Underwater inspection of the failed section of the breakwater
Acquisition of hindcast wave data and prediction of extreme wave conditions resulting from tropical storms
Numerical transformation of offshore waves to nearshore using the Nearshore
Spectral Module (NSW) of the Mike21 software suite
Preparation of preliminary repair recommendations
Final design of the breakwater repair using 11 m³ Core-Loc concrete armor units
Preparation of design drawings and tender documents
Supervision of construction
