Halcrow are the designers for the 2.5 km extension from King George V station to the new Woolwich Arsenal underground station. The extension will include a pair of 5.3 m diameter tunnels, each 1.8km in length. Tunnel ventilation and smoke control in case of fire will be provided by axial fans installed in a 15 m diameter intervention shaft situated just south of the River Thames.

Smoke control in case of a train fire within the station will be provided by smoke extraction ducts located along the platform tunnels. Halcrow’s Computational Fluid Dynamics experts have designed the smoke extraction system and smoke curtains to provide adequate protection to passengers, railway staff and the emergency services in case of fire.

Halcrow have integrated the smoke control provisions within the station and tunnels into an holistic fire safety strategy for the DLR extension to Woolwich Arsenal, incorporating both passive and active fire protection measures.
