Development and improvement of spate irrigation schemes in the Red Sea lowlands to promote sustainable agricultural production including design of appropriate diversion works and control structures, economic and social assessment.

The two key objectives of the Project were:

to introduce appropriate spate irrigation designs and practices in the Eastern Lowlands in order to increase and improve agricultural production, food security, economic activity and regional stability, and
to use this as the mechanism to establish the capability within the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) to independently replicate these improved designs and practices in similar wadi areas.

The design objectives were:

diversion of a higher proportion of the wadi flows
more efficient utilisation of the diverted water
reduction in the physical effort expended for operation and maintenance.
